Vernon - Make it Yours
To capture the essence of Vernon in the North Okanagan, you need only look at its setting. Surrounded by three lakes, abundant agricultural land and green hillsides and mountains, Vernon is a small city (pop. 36,000) whose inhabitants enjoy an active lifestyle focused on outdoor recreation as well as culture and the arts. With a proud heritage of agriculture and ranching, Vernon maintains its links to the past while offering modern amenities and activities in a beautiful, peaceful setting.
In winter, Silver Star Resort and Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre (host to the 2011 Sparkling Hill Masters World Cup); welcome visitors from around the world who love the deep Okanagan powder and clear blue skies. The area boasts outstanding snowmobiling and snowshoeing trips all within 30 minutes of downtown Vernon. Winter is also the time for the 10 day Vernon Winter Carnival, now in its 51st year.
In summer, our many golf courses cater to all skill levels. 2010 marks the opening of the new Doug Carrick designed Ridge Course at Predator Ridge. Our lakes are the focus for boating, swimming, watersports and picnics in the parks. Our downtown features independent retailers and is always busy with festivals, music and great opportunities for a little retail therapy. Our cultural strolls include galleries, studios, museums and our well known downtown murals that honour our history. For the nature enthusiasts and “birders”, the Allan Brooks Nature Centre offers experiences designed to protect our landscape and celebrate the numerous feathered friends that visit our area.
2010 also marks the opening of North America’s first European style wellness hotel – Sparkling Hill with its unique spa treatments like the -110C Cryotherapy sauna.
Family friendly Vernon has great experiences for every generation at the Okanagan Science Centre, the Greater Vernon Museum, Atlantis Waterslides and the Vernon Community Art Centre. You can see active farming at Davison Orchards or Planet Bee or learn about ranching and our early settlers at the Historic O’Keefe Ranch and from April to October, our farmer’s markets supply the freshest food available direct from over 100 growers.
